Blood Pressure
Blood pressure is the force of blood pushing against blood vessel walls. High blood pressure (hypertension) strains the heart which contributes to the risk of heart failure. High blood pressure is often referred to as the “silent killer” because there are often no symptoms or warning signs.
Know What Range You Are In
- Normal: Less than 120/80
- Pre-Hypertension: 120-139/80-89
- Stage 1 Hypertension: 140-159/90-99
- Stage 2 Hypertension: 160 and above/100 and above
Prevent and Reduce Your Risk
- Eat a healthy diet and limit salt consumption.
- Maintain a healthy weight and lose 5-10% of excess weight.
- Exercise regularly for at least 150 minutes of moderate intensity per week.
- Drink alcohol in moderation only.
- Get at least 8 hours of sleep per night.
- Quit smoking as it increases your risk for heart attack.
- Monitor your blood pressure at home and get regular checkups to keep tabs on your blood pressure to ensure your lifestyle changes are working.
- Get support from family and friends.
